Emergency Recovery Project (ERP)

Formerly the Hurricane Dean Emergency Loan

Jamaica suffered extensive damage due to the passage of Hurricane Dean on August 19, 2007. The total damage is estimated to be US$326.94 million. The estimated cost of rehabilitation and reconstruction works is between US$ 257 – 328 million. In light of this, the Government of Jamaica (GoJ) requested World Bank support for the reconstruction works poorer communities affected by the Hurricane. 

The proposed project will support the rehabilitation of community infrastructure facilities including early childhood, primary and all-age schools, community health clinics and critical feeder roads which have been damaged by Hurricane Dean. Additionally the project will support capacity building activities to increase the ability of the Government to respond to natural disasters.

The Hurricane Dean Emergency Recovery Loan agreement was signed on January 8, 2008 at the the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA for a sum of US$10 million. the implementation period is between March 1, 2008 and March 28, 2011.
