JSIF celebrates successful staging of first Sports Summer Camps
I had the pleasure of working on the design and implementation of the JSIF’s inaugural Sports Summer Camps this month. It was delightful to watch the 120 participants, aged 11 -17 from Denham Town and August Town eagerly attempt various sports- most for the first time - including chess, lawn tennis, badminton, taekwondo and boxing, supervised by highly skilled coaches. From the feedback received from parents, campers and staff, it was an enjoyable experience. Chess was very popular among the male participants and quietened the usually energetic group who whispered in hushed tones as they competed with each other. Sports also provided an avenue to build life skills and promote the values of team work, respect for self and others, anger and conflict management, leadership and determination.
The cognitive, physical and social benefits of sports are immense; increasing investment in infrastructure, equipment, and coaching is necessary to expand access to a wider range of sports by our most vulnerable students. Let’s act now! Adopt a sports club at your local school, donate equipment and supplies or volunteer your services. Our students are counting on us to act now!
