JSIF Christmas tree lights hope in Cooke Street

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund's community Christmas tree - lighting ceremony brought cheer among the residents of the seaside community of Cooke Street in Savanna-L-Mar in Westmoreland.

The event, the residents said, brought joy and great hope to the approximately 500 people including women and children who are living in 296 houses.

They said many of them have never participated or witnessed such a ceremony because of the boundaries that are being maintained in the ongoing turf war and gang violence for approximately 40 years.

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) has received the Jamaica Institution of Engineers (JIE) 2022 Engineering Project of the Year Award for the Port Royal Street Coastal Revetment Project.

The $1.3-billion project, which is designed to safeguard the Port Royal Street corridor from the effects of storm surges, entails construction of one kilometre of composite seawall and armour stone revetment structure, upgrading of drainage features, rehabilitation and raising of one kilometre of existing roadway and installation of a 4.7-metre-wide boardwalk to improve the site’s aesthetics and promote recreational activity along the shoreline.

The almost 200 residents of Epworth are boasting of the newly rehabilitated 3.1 km road from Davis Town into the community and the influx of opportunities and resilience now being experienced.

It is a difference that was sparked thanks to the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF), which provided some $1.8 million to the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) to finance the road rehabilitation.

Fisherman Garth Bowers, alias 'Silva' of Greenwich Town, St Andrew, today delivered on his promise made last year by providing 100lbs of fish to the Maxfield Park Children's Home.

Bowers was the recipient of a 40-horsepower boat engine under the government's Integrated Community Development Project, which was implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) has been commended by Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, for the significant work being done by the organisation.

“This is one public entity that deserves honour and respect because of their commitment and the fact that they have delivered more than they have committed on many, many occasions,” the Minister said.

He was speaking recently at the official opening of the Yallahs Fire Station in St. Thomas by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.
