Ministry of National Security

The Ministry of National Security (MNS) exercises overall responsibility for the security and defense of Jamaica. The security of Jamaica is provided by the national forces with the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) offering military service, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), having responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. The punishment and rehabilitation of offenders is carried out by the Correctional Services.

The JSIF and the MNS are collaborating on the Poverty Reduction Programme II (PRP II) funded by the European Union. Under PRP II the JSIF will be the implementing agency and the MNS will submit proposals for projects and facilitate capacity building and training exercises in volatile communities.

The Ministry will also provide data relating to existing projects in communities of interest as well as assist in the identification of the communities that are currently involved in the crime prevention programmes of Community Security Initiative (CSI), Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP), the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) and other relevant programmes being implemented by the MNS. MNS will make recommendations on the communities that should be pre-selected for PRP II interventions and encourage the building of synergies between PRP II and existing projects within the selected communities. The MNS will also identify communities for priority attention.

The JSIF and the MNS are also partners on the Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP) where the MNS is the lead agency and the JSIF provides technical advice and support in the rehabilitation of police stations and the construction or rehabilitation of multi-purpose courts and community centers in volatile communities.
