Ministry of Finance and The Public Service

The Ministry of Finance and The Public Service is the principal financial organization of Government of Jamaica with constitutional and legal responsibility for the prudent control of the financial resources of the Government. Through research and planning, it promotes the development and implementation of fiscal and economic policies intended to ensure sustainable growth in the national economy.

The Ministry’s mission is to ensure that Government pursues fiscal and economic policies that foster sustainable growth in the national economy, sound management of the country’s financial institutions, and cost effective delivery of public services.

Some if its major activities are:

  • The collection of revenues

  • The preparation and management of the national budget

  • Public sector financial management

  • Management of the public debt

The JSIF reported directly to the Ministry of Finance and The Public Service from its inception in 1996 until 2007 when it began to report to the Office of the Prime Minister. JSIF still has close ties with the Ministry, as it must report on its activities and disbursements because the money that is uses has been obtained through loans and grants to the Government of Jamaica.
