Tawes Pen is a peri-urban community located in Spanish Town, the capital of St. Catherine, which is currently recognised as a major crime hotspot. The Tawes Pen Community is situated to the north east of the Old Harbour Roundabout on the Mandela Highway and immediately to the west of the Old Spanish Town Cemetery.
he total area of the Tawes Pen community, as demarcated for the Inner City Basic Services Project extends to some 11 hectares and has a population, calculated from the 2001 Census of 1,822. This gives a residential density of 166 persons per hectare.
Tawes Pen is an area of mixed housing typology, ranging from substantial housing constructed with permanent materials to poorer housing using semi-permanent materials. The road system consists of a number of winding lanes, many of which are well surfaced. The topography of Tawes Pen is fairly flat.
There is a well organized Citizen's Association in the community, which supports community activities in Tawes Pen.
