The community known as Lauriston is located between the existing Lauriston Housing Scheme and the banks of the Rio Cobre river. It occupies a sloping site inclined towards the Rio Cobre.
Lauriston occupies an area of 12.4 hectares and has a population of 356 (STATIN Population Census, 2001).Lauriston is an area of mixed housing types, but adjacent to the banks of the Rio Cobre there is an area of squatter-type semi-permanent housing. This housing is under continual threat when the river rises in the rainy season. Lauriston can be termed rural in nature.
In general the whole area is lacking in adequate basic infrastructure. In particular, river training and embankment protection is entirely absent.
