Jones Town is an inner city community in Kingston. It is situated to the south of Cross Roads and directly west of National Heroes Park. On its northern boundary lies the Old Chinese Cemetery.

he total area of Jones Town is some 59 Hectares, and the population is 13,011, therefore indicating a residential density of around 342 persons per hectare. The topography of Jones Town is generally flat.

The main physical characteristics of Jones Town are similar to those found in the southern part of Passmore Town. Houses are predominantly detached, standing in their own lots, and built of permanent materials. They are however, with a few exceptions, run down and dilapidated. The community is well defined with a network of roads and footpaths. The southern part of Jones Town consists of an empty area, from which all the former housing was cleared towards the end of the 1970’s due to inter-community violence. This area is known as No Man’s Land.

In The Strategic Plan for Jones Town, prepared by the Kingston Restoration Company in 2002, it was reported that:

  • 82% of the buildings were in structurally poor condition
  • 20% of the lots were occupied by owner-occupiers
  • 40% of the lots were occupied by tenants with a formal arrangement with the owners
  • 40% of the lots were occupied by persons with no formal arrangement with the owners
