The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) in partnership with the Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) launched its drive to improve the well being of 180 young persons in 6 inner city communities under the Inner City Basic Services Project (ICBSP). The Launch marked the beginning of a six week media campaign which was aimed at using all areas of communication to reach the targeted number of mentors.
After the completion of the campaign it was found that over 250 young Jamaicans answered the call to action given by Rev. Al Miller, convener National Transformation Programme. Of this total more than 40% were males coming from all parts of the island.
The Mentoring programme forms part of the Social Intervention strategy that is being implemented through the Public Safety Component of the Project. The objective of mentoring is to:
‘Provide an opportunity for 180 young men and women to form positive relationships with Mentors who will en able them to make healthy lifestyle choices.’
Mentors are required to be involved with their mentees for a period of no less than 12 months. The relationship is not financial and supports the development of the young persons through coaching in academics and other areas of personal development.
